Watch a match from fifteen years ago and then a recent one, and the difference isn't just picture quality. The cutting is faster. There are more graphics. Replays come more often and repeat more. Commentators explain more of what's on screen.
None of that happened by accident. It's a response to the measured reality that a large majority of viewers are looking at a phone for a meaningful portion of the broadcast.
What the data shows
Survey and measurement work on second-screen usage during live sport has consistently found high rates — most viewers use a second device at some point during a match, and a substantial fraction do so for a large share of the running time.
Activity splits roughly into sport-related use — social media about the match, live stats, fantasy scores, betting — and unrelated use, which is just people looking at their phones because that's what people do now.
Crucially, broadcasters can measure attention indirectly. They know when viewers switch away, when they return, and how those patterns correlate with what was on screen. That feedback loop shapes production decisions.
How production adapted
Faster recovery cues. If a viewer looks up after twenty seconds on a phone, they need to know the state of play immediately. Hence the near-permanent scoreline and clock, hence the more frequent verbal restatement of the score, hence the "and it's still nil-nil here" that used to be an occasional courtesy and is now a rhythm.
More replays, repeated more. A significant chunk of the audience missed the incident live. Showing it three times from three angles isn't indulgence, it's coverage of an audience that was looking down.
Graphics as summary. On-screen statistics do a job that used to be done by watching. A possession bar tells you the shape of a half you weren't fully present for.
Tighter shots. More close-ups on faces and less wide tactical framing. Close shots read better on a small screen and carry emotional information faster, which matters when attention is intermittent.
That last one is the change I'd most like reversed, personally. The wide shot is where you can actually see football happening — the shape, the space, the movement off the ball. It's been substantially reduced across most broadcasters and it's a real loss for anyone watching tactically.
The commentary shift
Commentary has moved from description towards explanation and reaction.
When most viewers were watching continuously, the commentator's job was partly to add information the picture didn't carry. Now a lot of the job is to signal importance — to indicate through tone and urgency that this is a moment worth looking up for.
You can hear this in how build-up play gets covered. Twenty passes in midfield used to be described. Now they're often accompanied by broader discussion, and the voice only changes register when something is about to happen. That register change is functionally an alert.
Co-commentary has expanded for related reasons. A conversation holds intermittent attention better than a monologue, and a discussion can be joined halfway through in a way a description can't.
What the apps did
Broadcasters and leagues have mostly stopped fighting the second screen and started trying to own it.
Official apps with live stats, alternate camera angles, in-game highlights, and social features. The logic is straightforward — if viewers are going to look at a phone, better it's your phone content than a competitor's.
Success has been mixed. The apps that work tend to offer something the broadcast can't — choose-your-own camera angles, detailed live data, or highlights clipped instantly. The ones that fail tend to be duplicating the broadcast experience in a worse form.
Betting integration is the commercially dominant version of this in many markets, and it's the one with the most obvious social costs. In-play betting is specifically designed to make the second screen essential, and it works, which is exactly the problem.
The thing that hasn't been solved
Latency. Broadcast feeds run behind the live event, and different distribution paths run at different delays. Streaming is typically further behind than satellite, which is further behind than being in the ground.
This wasn't much of an issue when the alternative information source was a radio. It's a serious one when a viewer's phone is pushing a goal notification thirty seconds before the goal appears on their screen.
There's been real engineering work on low-latency streaming and the gap has narrowed considerably. It hasn't closed, and it probably can't entirely, given the processing chain between camera and living room.
Which produces the modern experience of learning that your team has scored from a vibration in your pocket, and then waiting to watch it happen. That's a genuinely worse product than the one that existed before both technologies, and neither industry has an obvious incentive to fix it.
