A large share of American professional recruitment depends on college footage. That footage was filmed for coaching staff and highlight reels, not for the analysis now being applied to it.

The camera was placed for cost, not for coverage

Most college programs film from a single elevated position, and often from a lower height than professional venues allow. A low angle compresses the far half of the field.

Automated tracking depends on separating players from one another, and compression makes distant players overlap in the image. The software loses identities exactly where it needs them.

Some venues have no permanent camera position at all, so the footage was shot from a scissor lift or a press box with an obstructed view.

Framing follows the ball

Operators pan and zoom to keep play in frame, which is what a coach wants and what an analysis system cannot use. Off-ball players leave the picture entirely.

Scouting increasingly values what a player does away from the ball, so the footage systematically omits the behavior the evaluation most wants to see.

A fixed wide camera solves this and is far cheaper than it was, but the archive of past seasons was already filmed the other way.

Recording conditions vary wildly

Lighting on college fields ranges from full stadium rigs to floodlights sized for training, and low light forces cameras into settings that blur moving players.

Frame rate matters as much as resolution for tracking, and consumer recording defaults are often too low to resolve a sprint cleanly.

Weather adds another layer, since rain on a lens or snow on a field defeats the contrast that separates a player from the background.

Metadata is usually missing

Professional footage arrives with a clock, a known lineup and synchronized event data. College footage frequently arrives as a file with a date in its name.

Without a synchronized clock, matching a moment in video to an event in a spreadsheet becomes manual work, and manual work does not scale across hundreds of prospects.

Programs that publish structured data alongside video make their players easier to evaluate, which is a quiet competitive advantage for the athletes involved.

Why analysts still use it

Imperfect footage of a real match beats a highlight package, because highlights are selected by someone with an interest in the conclusion.

Analysts adapt by using video for qualitative judgment and treating any automated numbers from it as indicative rather than measured.

Being explicit about which conclusions the footage can support is what separates a usable college evaluation from one that borrows the authority of professional data without the underlying quality.
