Valuation models built on football data tend to weight playing time more heavily than most supporters expect. The reason is statistical rather than a judgement about what matters in a match.

Goals are a small-sample measurement

A forward may take a few shots per match and convert a small fraction of them. Across a season that produces a total built from a modest number of events.

Small counts fluctuate substantially for reasons unrelated to ability, and finishing conversion is among the least stable measurements in the sport. A run of form and a run of luck look identical in the data.

Any model that leans heavily on goal totals inherits that instability directly into its output.

Minutes accumulate steadily

Playing time is recorded continuously rather than in rare events, so a season produces a large and stable quantity. It moves gradually rather than jumping.

That stability makes it a far better predictor of the following season's minutes than goals are of the following season's goals.

Models reward inputs that predict the future well, and availability does that better than almost anything else on a match sheet.

Selection carries a coach's judgement

A player who starts consistently is being chosen repeatedly by people watching him daily in training. That judgement incorporates information no dataset contains.

Minutes therefore act as a compressed expert opinion, aggregated across whoever has selected the player over several seasons.

The signal weakens where a squad is thin or a manager is under pressure, but across a career it remains informative.

Availability is itself the scarce commodity

A player who misses long periods delivers less value regardless of quality, and buying clubs price that risk explicitly. Injury history feeds directly into what a club will offer.

Because injury tends to recur, past availability predicts future availability more reliably than most performance measures predict future performance.

A durable player with moderate output can therefore be valued above a brilliant one who plays half a season.

The weighting has known failure modes

Minutes at a weak club are not equivalent to minutes at a strong one, and a naive model overvalues players who are simply the best option available to a poor team.

Adjustments for competition strength help but rest on the same league-translation assumptions that make cross-market comparison difficult.

The honest description is that minutes are the most reliable input available rather than the most meaningful one, and every model built on them is trading relevance for stability.
